Identify This Insect

by "Stephen Swift" <sjs@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > May 25, 2008 at 05:22 PM

Hello entomologists,

A few years ago I remember seeing this caterpillar in my backyard. I've
never seen anything like it before or since.

I touched it on the back, and discovered that it had these erectile
tissues
on its head that grew into two long, curved projections when attacked (I
think they were orange.) I don't recall if they smelled bad, but I think
it
was trying to touch me with them, and I avoided them.

What is this species, and what does the adult look like? Is it rare? What
does it eat? Do these projections give a noxious chemical? Thanks in
advance.
