Over the weekend, my friends surrendered one of their 2 dogs to animal
control to be put down because he was really sick. I loved the dog,
and feel really bad that I wasn't able to help more. My friends
really don't have much money, and I am no better off, so I guess
calling animal control was the best thing they could think of to do.
Anyway, the dog hadn't been to the vet in a while and I hadn't seen
him in a couple months, but did see him the day before he got taken
away and he had lost alot of weight. He had once been a robust, on
the verge of fat, dog, and when I saw him over the weekend, I could
nearly see his ribs, backbone, and his butt was really boney.
I've been looking up stuff online to try and figure out what may have
been wrong with him, but can't come to any clear conclusions. He had
been throwing up alot in the last four or five days, at first
vomitting bile, but later just clear watery liquid. He wasn't eating
or pooping. He was also having accidents in the house for the last
few months. He was also really lethargic, and drank huge amounts of
water whenever he could. Some of the symptoms seem to be bloat, which
fits his breed (german shephard mix). However, I don't know if this
is consistent with the weight loss and excessive drinking, since I
thought bloat hit suddenly and could kill within 24 hours. Another
factor is that my friends A/C had been broken for the previous 5 or so
days, and we were experiencing really hot weather (>80 degrees), so
maybe he had heat exhaustion or something like that.
I know this is alot of information, but if anyone has any thoughts on
what may have happened to him, it would be greatly appreciated.
He was such a wonderful dog, and it just makes me sick that my friends
didn't take better care of him and that I couldn't do anything for
him.
