The way the coolers work here, is you need a window open to draw the
air into  the room.  We use swamp coolers (water run over excelsior
pads, and wind pulled through them).  Basically a trumped up fan with
a wet towel on it (lol), so the open window is necessary.
Refrigerated air (what most a/c units are) does not work well here
(high desert).

Unfortunately, when it's a bit humid out, the cooler doesn't work
except to move the air around.  It's been slightly humid since mid-
June, but we seem to be drying out a bit (maybe).
