Gout in Cockatiels

by "Andy" <andrewpreece@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jul 29, 2008 at 05:51 PM

Just trying to find out if someone has experience of this? My cockatiel has

been to two vets so far, both useless bluffers. No treatment except
Avimix,
a supplement. No diagnosis either.

She has swollen wing joints, and droops her wings, also shuffles around
and
is unsure on her feet. Feathers look a bit ruffled and she has developed
an
overgrown beak on one side, I have started to trim it. This has been going

on for maybe 9 months.

I think, reading what I can, that it's articular gout, and have started
trying to put her on a low protein pelletted diet, put supplements like
vitamin A in her water and also am giving her some treatment via dropper (

which I won't mention so as to se what people suggest unprompted ).
Question
about the dropper also, I'm giving her 1cc but despite wrapping her in a
towel, in a normal attitude, with her head up, she seems to wheeze a bit
afterwards - is there a trick to getting her to drink it ( what doesn't go

down her front that is ) as opposed to having it go down the wrong way?

She is a lutino. There's another cockatiel with her so it's hard to put
the
treatments in the drinking water without him getting them too. Any
thoughts
on the matter out there?

Regards,

Andy
