OK, before I look like a total goober in front of my vet, has anyone
here ever seen a grey with melanoma on the butt cheek? I noticed a
couple months ago Lite had a little dent in her butt muscle, alongside
the tail and just below the point of the buttock, not on the side of the
butt but the direct back part of the muscle. I've seen horses with funky
muscle dents before, and since she was sound and it was non-painful I
sort of scratched my head and kept an eye on it but didn't think a lot
of it.
Now it is distinctly not a dimple into the muscle, but a slightly raised
area above the 'dent' that causes the appearance of a dent in the muscle
due to placement--really it is the hollow below the raised area and
above the normal swell of muscle beneath. The slightly raised area is
firm, not painful, not hot, and palpates like a melanoma. When you look
at the points of her buttocks from directly behind her when she is
standing square they eye asymmetrical (they used to be symmetrical).
The vet comes tomorrow for well baby check up plus teeth, lameness exam
on Dancer, and I figure I might as well ask about this new melanoma, but
I just wondered if anyone has seen one in that spot before. I've
not--under the tail, on the sheath, around the udders, on the edges of
the vulva, in the mouth, on the throatlatch, on the head once in a great
while, but never sitting on a major muscle mass like the back of the
buttock. Which isn't to say it could not crop up there, of course.
I hate to think about what her insides might be looking like, honestly.
I've known too many greys who had them in as well as out, and she seems
to have so many, and new ones popping up all the time. JC can attest to
the major change in size and amount of melanoma in the last 3 1/2 years.
