A hiker's GPS ought to work. This one is $$$$, but there are others.

I believe Garmin has quite a few that are nice for runners and hikers and 
such.  Not cheap.  I'd like one for walks/runs with my dog but, Santa
might 
have to wait a little longer.  :-)  JJ
