I just helped a friend ****p 4 pelican cases full of cameras and other 
gear to China (with return ****pping back next month).  We used a freight 
forwarding company.  The cost to ****p to China was $660 for the 4 cases, 
including $25000 in insurance.  We also got a quote to send them as 
"parcels" with UPS - $2700 one way.  So there's a HUGE price difference 
depending on if the items are sent as a "freight ****pment" or as a 
"parcel".  (In both cases the time was about 1 week - this is for "air" 
****pment - the extra time is due to scheduling for flights and clearing 
customs.)

If you are a private individual you can't ****p out of the US as a 
"freight ****pment" due to new post-911 ****pping rules.  You have to be a 
known ****pper and a business with an EIN (rather than SSN).  Or you can 
****p as a "parcel" thru UPS or DHL etc. and pay thru the nose.  Your 
parcels may also be subject to a random delay of 3-10 days, in addition 
to the actual ****pment time.
