If someone is going to sue, then surely about the illness/consequent
lowering of value of the horse? ('He was perfectly fine when you picked
him up')

If you get a qualified vet - rather than doctoring the horse yourself -
and you pay for it, where's the damage for the horse owner _in the
treatment_? 

Being in the UK, I am finding it very hard to imagine that anyone would
sue in this situation - the horse is in the OP's care, it develops a
problem, the OP treats it. 

That the owner might say 'you broke it, it's yours' is a different
matter. He'll either take it back or he won't, but I am thinking that
he's got far more of a case to not take the horse back if it fell ill
and *wasn't* treated, then if the tem****ary caretaker did everything to
fix the situation by involving a qualified vet.
