This thread just reaffirms WHY I would not allow a horse out
on trial. And even when I have in the past it was always with
the agreement that should the horse develop a medical issue
the prospective buyer 1) Call the vet 2) Call us. And they were
liable for any vet bills and were expected to give appropriate
medical care.
Frankly, it's easier to say "Nope, no trial, horse stays here,
you are welcome to come any time you like to take a lesson."
We will let them out on pre-purchase but the same stipulations
as going out "on trial" apply.
Hardass? You betcha. Keeping the horse's well-being in mind
when it is out our our care, custody and control? Yup.
MHO, someone does not care very much about this horse.
And that is sad.

Bad situation in that case. I'd not go through this broker again.
The owners are not there. Maybe they care, maybe they do not
(betting on the latter) Who has care, custody and control of
this horse? The broker I suppose?
BO and Caelan should not be in this situation with a horse
like this with no recourse other than palliative care that
they can provide.

Well... I would have called a vet, gotten his/her take on it and
perhaps let them intercede with the broker, if they were
comfortable doing so.
I have known vets who have treated horses who were in dire
straits even though they had no permission from the owners
and damn well knew they were going to get stiffed on the bill.
They take an oath, just like doctors and IME they take it very,
very seriously.
