Before my sister and I moved our horses we were in your situation more
times 
than we cared to count. Sometimes we did the right thing and worried about

the consequences later (the bill which really wasn't in our budget to take

care of). The BO was rarely available for consultation and had more or
less 
checked out of the situation at the barn and we didn't want horses to
suffer 
needlessly.

To name a few...We made the wretched life of a lame Paint mare more 
comfortable by having the farrier pull her shoes...his opinion was that no

shoes at all were better than the too small ones she was wearing (so none
of 
you think we go around pulling random shoes in favor of a barefoot 
existence). The BO wanted no work at all done on her because she was there

on consignment from another barn. Pulling shoes did make her less lame. 
Another time a mare had been wearing her halter in the rain and the sun
and 
the wind with a fly mask over it. She flipped over on V at some point so
we 
weren't pulling her out to ride her and she wasn't our horse anyway so we 
really didn't have any reason to deal with her much. Someone came to look
at 
her with the intent of buying her and we noticed her halter had fused into

the area behind her ears. The vet was called immediately to at least tranq

her so we could get the halter off.  It was too late for him to do much 
since the wound was in a stage of healing. but we did keep her in the barn

at night and turned her out with our band of thugs until the wound was 
completely healed. There was also the situation where the woman who had a 
vested interest in one of the farm horses decided to call the farrier and 
get his feet trimmed and shoes reset because his feet were terrible,
always 
had been terrible, and a PPE revealed they always would be terrible with a

bad case of pedal osteitis and club foot. I always wished that woman had
put 
him down before checking out of the barn situation herself even if she 
wasn't technically the owner (long story as to why that I can't really 
discuss).
