Well, our Sundae pony is lame again. She's had thirty days of
Doxycyline this spring and was doing much better, though still
occasionally off once in a while. This weekend she went off to a games
camp and was ridden for three hours without her usual gram of bute to
keep her comfy for such intensive work. (My kid gave her dinner instead
of breakfast at breakfast, the bute was in her breakfast - yes, it was
labeled.) She is now off, even with her gram of bute. I don't want to
put her on bute long term, and my vet opposes that. I'm calling him
first thing in the morning, but I was wondering if anyone else has
experience with Lyme disease - and how long she should be on the Doxy.
I've spoken with a number of people who say she should have been on
Doxycyline for a minimum of 90 days, not just 30. Thirty days
apparently can actually make it worse, the virus that survives comes
back even stronger. Again, I am calling the vet in the morning, but was
looking for more experienced voices to throw in when asking him about
putting her back on the Doxy. Our Sassy pony strained a tendon somehow
and is off for the summer, so we need our Sundae pony to go to
nationals, if she can. Her rider was in tears yesterday, she loves
Sundae.
