My grandson helped me pick up the round bale of alfalfa - oh, so
difficult to winch up, it's the heaviest bale I carry. I bought two of
only five from my friend's first cut field - not a good comparison
with last year's plenty.
And then we went mooching the Goodwill Thrift store for a
junior denim vest and ****rts, a garage sale for juvenile boots, and
the hardware store for spurs with blunt rowels.
With his western hat smoothed to a decent curve at the rim, I now
have me a junior cut-price cowboy.
I suppose I should get a pony for him - he's eight and enthusiastic.
But I do know better - even one horse is a stern burden, as well as a
pleasure. Still, it's the thought of showing a boy that he can compete
at a play day on his merits, in friendly company.....
