Update from Friday, June 27:
NO digital pulses either today or yesterday am; farrier also checked
yesterday when he came back to do the other horses on the list and he
said same thing. Heat in left front foot ONLY (that is the one that
lost the shoe on Tuesday.) Not camped out front or back. Body was
clean, so didn't appear he had laid down much if at all last night
after BO checked him for me at 7:30pm. Moving much better today,
except on gravel driveway and gimpy on left front. Willing to leave
stall and was moving around quite freely in paddock, once off of
gravel and onto softer ground. So, my best guess is an abcess that is
getting ready to burst because feet were too long and he graveled
through one of the nail holes. Ichtamol twice daily on the coronary
band usually works pretty darned good for us!
One more thing I forgot to mention is that he is on Ugard to help
control his ulcers. I wondered if what I was seeing on Wednesday
night wasn't additional pain in his stomach added to the pain in his
feet, thus the colicky appearance. I doubled his dosage of Ugard just
to be safe and it seemed to help with the colicky symptoms, and the
lying down. Why did I think that ulcers were a possiblity? We had a
thoroughbred gelding about 3 years ago, who was taking FOREVER to get
rid of his abcess. I found him down in his stall one morning after he
was already 3 legged lame on the abcessing foot, acting like he was
colicking and grinding his teeth. Vet had been out already that week
to see what we could do for the foot, but we called him thinking we
were going to have to euthanize Billy. Turns out the pain in his foot
was causing him to develop an ulcer (along with the bute he was
taking!) and some Gastroguard and a nerve block in the sore foot
created a whole new horse the next morning when I arrived to do
chores!
And to answer some more points from above:
He will NOT be forgotten again on the next shoing cycle. As I said
before, entirely my fault for not paying better attention.
Has been doing the on and off grass every couple of days for a few
hours for the 6 years he has lived at this farm, and we have had
wetter, better grass growing seasons in that time, We have never had
a problem with him or the others foundering, and YES, I know they can
colic and/or founder if not managed correctly. We start with small
amounts of time in the spring and increase it as they become
accustomed.
Never said I didn't check for heat in his feet, and just forgot to say
I had. Didn't think of digital pulses until after you all mentioned
it.
As a vet tech, I am trained to triage emergencies on a regular basis
with the small animals with which I work. The BOs and I have a GREAT
relation****p with our equine vet practice because they know we are
pretty good at triaging and treating things we can do ourselves, and
only calling them if it is beyond what we can do. So, I know I won't
change the opinion that I am bordering on abuse for my horse, but I am
not going to call the vet EVERY time something happens. I asked for
opinions on what I saw, and I have been treated like the village idiot
by some people for doing so.
So, I guess I won't let the door hit me on the ass on the way out, but
I will just go back to lurking here instead of posting. My thanks to
those who posted helpful info and suggestions; that really was all I
was asking about and for.
