I might add that even after we dry-lotted the Shetland, he still
managed to get another bout of founder on a short exposure to grass.
It killed him.

Grass is really more insidious than most people think. When I first
bought Mocha, I took one look at her and knew I really didn't dare put
her on open turnout on Willamette Valley grass, just based on what I
know about grass founder. Better to be safe than sorry, and a horse
like her is better off slightly on the skinny side than being allowed
to gain any degree of weight--and keep her off the grass.
