Laminitis did indeed cross my mind, but the farrier should or would
have seen blood in the lamina, correct?  And as I said above, I have
foundered a horse before, and this really doesn't present the same way
EXCEPT for the laying down bit.

The farrier wouldn't needed to have seen blood in the lamina or other
signs 
like that.  He would have noticed that the horse was unwilling to stand
with 
a foot raised.  Especially the fronts.  A laminitic horse that is hurting 
bad enough to refuse to walk and won't even get up, will be too sore to 
stand for a shoe.  It would have been obvious I would think.  Of course he

might have come right at the start of the episode and if your horse is 
normally a butt about shoeing, he may not have noticed that it was a pain 
issue instead.  My farrier usually tells me when my mare is more stiff or
if 
he sees anything going on with her feet.  He knows I have a paranoia about

founder!  Grazing muzzles are our friends around here!
