I may not be Tom, but by the look of things in this set, the outside
rearmost nail didn't go anywhere - it was the branch of the shoe behind
the nail that got tweaked (and from what I can see, pretty severely -
enough that I'm even *MORE* amazed at how well he ran until his jock
finally pulled him up at the top of the stretch.)
I'm also surprised he didn't do himself some serious, possibly
permanent, damage by coming down on it at full speed over and over
again. What those shots show doesn't seem to me like it would be all
that much different from a human trying to run across concrete rubble
without breaking an ankle or leg in the process.
