I grew up in Southern California and even though I lived in "the Bay
Area" for many years, "SF" meant San Fernando to me.
The snobs of San Francisco assume that the whole world knows that "The
Bay Area means San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Alameda
Counties, and "the City" means the City and County of San Francisco.
Calling it "Frisco" is grounds for homicide. I never wanted to insult
the folks of the Colorado city of that name.
Before you ignite on the list of counties--consider "North Bay", "East
Bay" and other collective terms preferred for the other counties.
Yes, there probably is some overlap, as there is with "Silicon Valley",
and "South Bay".
I understand that there are one or two people east of the Missouri who
think "The City" (as in "*** in The City") belongs to them.
I dislike the therm so will not act as referee.
