Back before implanted lenses, when cataract surgery meant wearing 
bottle-bottom cl*****, doctors wouldn't perform it unless the patient's 
vision was very poor. For mild cases, the gain from improved acuity was 
more than offset by extreme tunnel vision, and patients often regretted 
the surgery. Rather than explain this, some doctors simply declared that 
the cataract wasn't "ripe" yet.

Some practitioners retain this attitude today and put off suggesting 
surgery when it would be helpful. I hope that isn't what happened to 
you, and the rest of us oldsters should keep the possibility in mind.
