I took another hike up to our local air****t yesterday evening. In
addition to dozens of indigo buntings, I saw yellow-shafted flickers,
blue-winged warblers, several common yellowthroats and my second
yellow-breasted chat. In this case, I heard the Y-BC long before I
saw it. it was running through its inventory of sounds, and, at
first, I thought it was a mockingbird--they are very plentiful around
here. But there was a different character to the sounds, and I kept
scanning the dense shrubby trees for a glimpse of what was making
them. Suddenly, the Y-BC popped out and perched on a branch of a
broken wild cherry tree. I got a good look at it before it went back
into the cover, chatting away as it disappeared. i also saw Eastern
Kingbirds.
If the predicted rain for today holds off. I'm going to hike around
the nearby Pleasant Creek Wetlands Area this evening. It is full of
warblers.
