Just got back from a visit to Apopka, Florida. I had very little
time for birding, but I did manage to see several magnificent Swallow-
Tailed Kites. They have to be the most graceful fliers I've seen. One
was particularly memorable as it soared above Sand Lake at Wekiva
Springs State Park. I also saw Eastern Kingbirds there, along with
scores of woodpeckers, mostly Red-Bellied. A Bald Eagle showed up a
couple times in a tree across from where I was staying.
On the way to the air****t to fly home, we were slowly rounding an
entrance ramp on a highway when I saw a Florida Scrub-Jay perched on
the guard rail. I guess they are where you find them!
In addition to all these avian delights on happened on a 15
inch(guesstimated) Eastern Coral S**** on the edge of a golf course---
I was hiking, not golfing. No doubt about what it was-- "Red on
Yellow, Kills a Fellow. Red on Black, Friend to Jack" BTW, that
mantra applies only to N. American coral s****s, so don't rely on it
should you encounter any elsewhere. It went its way--I went mine.
