The south Carolina of Natural Resources has just opened a new Wildlife
Management Area! It is Botany Bay Plantation on Edisto Island. 4630
acres that should include just about everything a SC barrier island
has to offer.
For over 30 years my family has tried to spend a week together at the
beach on Edisto Island--most years we make it and this year will be no
exception. We will be there the first week of august and I can hardly
wait. Over the years we have explored most of the island that is
accessible to the public but much of the island is private property
and in the summer much of the island is brimming with people not
birds. Edisto Island is one of my favorite places and although it has
changed in the 30 years plus that I have known the place, the
Islanders have done a good job of keeping development in check and not
letting all of the wild places be paved over with condos. The new WMA
should be wonderful in the fall and spring before and after the crowds
leave.
