I made a hole in my outdoor parakeet aviary so that they could come and
go as they wish... I had wondered whether this might work or not and I
know that it will undoubtedly generate protest but I was surprised and
quite pleased to see them learn to come and go out into the wild... I
have about 30 parakeets in a large outdoor aviary.. About 4 weeks ago
I made a small opening and put a perch that extended in and out of the
cage. I made the hole just small enough where they can get through and
put it quite high to discourage rodents, s****s etc. from entering
easily.. Anyway it seems that about 6 of the birds have learned to
come and go and do so frequently... I am surprised about how much time
they choose to stay in the cage and also surprised that only about 6 of
them do go out... maybe that will change with time.. I guess that the
food, water, companion****p, shelter and nesting boxes keep them coming
back.. I am not sure how it will turn out but so far so good... They
are very fast flyers and it is quite a thrill to see them fly around..
I am worried about the hawks though..
