Hello everyone,
I posted this question to Yahoo Budgies group two week ago and not a
single person responded to me. Hopefully someone here can help.
My name is Kelly and I have had budgies as pets for 25
years. I currently have two--Midori and Gogo. They
are both males. They share a cage, and get about 3
hours out each day, and much more on the weekends.
They are not clipped. In addition to seeds and
grains, they get fresh veggies and baby food every
day.
I have a problem and I hope someone here will be able
to help. I also have an eclectus and belong to an
eclectus list which has been tremendously helpful, so
I'm hoping this list can provide some insight.
A few months ago, I noticed that Gogo was passing
whole seeds in his poop. They were determined to have
giardia and both were treated with Flagyl. After
treatment, they were still passing seeds, and a fecal
gram stain was done. Significant yeast was found, and
both were treated with Nystatin. After that, Gogo was
still passing seeds- they were re-tested for giardia
and gram-stained, and everything came back normal.
They have been examined by 2 avian vets and both seem
to think that PDD is unlikely. At this point it is
only Gogo that is passing whole seeds. I should add
that during all this time, both birds have been
active, eating, and appeared normal. One of the vet
techs told me that she had a similar thing happen with
her cockateil and that he had just lost the ability to
digest seeds. That doesn't sound right. Does anyone
have any ideas what might be the problem?
Thanks very much,
Kelly, Midori and Gogo
