Nan's responses seem good. I don't think it's so much that they don't want
free-flight (they do), and they get used to any surroundings, it's more
how
easily you can get them back to their cage, and how easily they come to
you.
But every bird will have their own personal traits.
Our first bird was alone with us for 3 months. He comes to us readily,
even
after being scared, although less so since we added one new bird, and then
another. Their favorite perch is on top of our living room vertical
blinds,
since it's up nice and high.
The second is naturally shy. Idolizes the first bird and tries to imitate
it
in every way. So will come to us if the first bird does, and sometimes on
his own. But will ALWAYS run away inside or out of the cage if we try to
approach too close.
The third isn't afraid of us (or much else). Will hop on our hand if he's
in
the cage, but once out...you can't get too close to him.
Once the first bird is taken back to the cage (which sometimes takes a few
attempts now that the other birds try to get him to stay out) the other
two
will usually follow pretty quickly with some encouragement. They also fly
back on their own when they feel like it.
'Training' is impossible with them because they don't seem to care much
about toys or any kind of foods. None of them will EVER eat from our
hands.
They're also scared of most perches for some reason. They can take them or
leave them. Even though I've had to 'chase' and 'catch' them a few times
(gently, and not very successfully because the 2 newer ones are darned
fast!) they still trust me. At the Vets, they both flew to me on their own
for the first time ever because they were scared enough to see me as a
safe
place. Pity I had to break that by then grabbing them for the Vet to
examine... ): Poor guys.
I'd say for best results, keep the untamed bird in the cage until he jumps
on your finger when you place it in front of him. Then free-flight
shouldn't
be a problem.
