Hi
I make a mix for my pet mice. Is there a bulk store in your area?
Where seeds and grains and mixes are sold in bins that you weigh out in
bags? It's much cheaper this way. I make enough mix to feed my 20
mice for almost 3 months and it only costs me $13 for all my supplies
at the bulk store.
My variances in the mix usually include:
-about 15 cups of generic hamster seed mix (they have this at bulk
store)
-about 3 cups of cockateil seed mix
-about 3 cups of generic wild bird seed mix
-about 2 cups of black sunflower seeds in shell (for birds)
-about 1 cup of split dried peas
-about 1 cup of flax seed
-about 2 cups of pumpkin seeds
-about 2 cups dry cat or dog food
-about 4 cups of dry cereal (rice, etc.)
-about 7 or 8 small dog bone biscuits (like Milk Bone)
and for good measure, there is usually one bag of actual store-bought
mouse block tossed into the mix...but i end up only buying a
store-bought bag every few months this way. the rest is the bulk and
$13 lasts almost 3 months.
-i try and avoid peanuts and corn
-sometimes i will add about 1 cup of plain raisins
on top of the mix, they have:
- fresh water at all times, of course
- other treats from the pet store (Vitakraft snacks, etc.)
- wood chews (usually "tasty twigs" brand)
- fresh foods like cut up apple or hard-boiled egg (can leave shell on)
or garden greens - once in a while, maybe once a week.
I'm on a very tight budget with hardly any money to spare, so this is
how I manage to feed my babies well without ru****ng over to Petsmart
every 2 seconds.
Hope it helps!
