Our vet once recommended a medicine for humans called "Fluimicil" (as it
is called in the Netherlands), which contains acetylcysteine. Fluimicil
is an over the counter medicine with mucus-dissolving qualities. Once a
day we'd give 0,5 ml. and it helped really well.
But if there's an infection, then a better medicine from a vet (who
knows what he's doing) is a must.
It took us a very long time to find a vet who really understands guinea
pigs, but eventually we found one. We need to drive 1,5 hours every time
(and back), but that is a small effort for us to ensure our piggers get
the best care there is... I live in a small village, and the vets over
here are used to dealing with cows, so guinea pigs are not really their
field of expertise.
