One of my three year old guineas - Darla - has a persistent breathing
problem which seems to come and go. It's like a rattling sound and is
more in her throat than her lungs. I took her to the vet last time it
happened and he gave her a baytril shot, followed by another a few
days later, that cleared it up but now it's back.
I'm reluctant to take her back as I don't think the vet really know's
what he is doing, I've tried another vet also.
So now I'm trying to treat her myself. I've got Peter Gurney's book -
Piggie Potions and he says that some piggies get this frequently and
still live a normal life span. She is happy and eating/drinking
normally. I've tried giving her children's sudafed 0.4 ml today and
yesterday, as well as keeping the house warm, hot water bottle in the
cage (which the other 2 love, but Darla won't go near!!) and tonight
I've dabbed a tiny amount of vapour rub on her nose.
I really don't want to take her back to the vets as they'll just pump
her with drugs again which won't cure it in the long run. As long as
she is happy and eating normally, is there any need for me to do
anything else than I am already doing? I'm aware that this is probably
a condition that she'll always have, I think I'd rather let her enjoy
life as much as possible rather than trips back and forth to the vets,
drugs and upset tummies. What do you think?
