This is an awful state of affairs. I'm going to make you both very fed
up when I tell you that in the UK we have a charity called the
Cambridge Cavy Trust (CCT - it costs =A320 per year to join) and all
consultations and treatments are free but the drugs cost a nominal
amount. When your pig is sick they have a 'hospital' service which
again costs a nominal amount - surgery used to be free - not sure now.
It is run by a lady and a voluntary army of devotees who have worked
with pigs for over 40 yrs - she recently toured NZ for 4 months.to
spread her expertise. She has trained very many students in
rodentology and they have set up their own pratices affiliated to hers
around our country. The recognised qualification is BAR (British
Associaion of Rodentologists) and only requires a good basic level of
education and an intense love of animals to participate. I have often
been attempted to do it myself but time is limiting as the course is
very intensive and some of it residential at Cambridge (Sth of
England). When you are qualified you hold surgeries 1 or 2 evenings a
week ( as an unpaid volunteer) in your own home with another more
qualified member for a year or more. Then you go it alone with
telephone advice from Cambridge if you 're unsure about anything. It's
hilarious when you go for an appointment at someone's private house as
you see rabbits ( lagomorphs strictly speaking), ferrets, mice,
hamsters, gebils and pigs covered in hay and wood chips in someone's
sitting room, being attended to on their dining room table, with their
favourite angle poise lamp, towels and soft pillows.. My husband said
'NO way at our house!!!' They also provide a nail trimming service and
bathing service in their bathrooms to show you how to do it properly.
They will also trim teeth without anaesthetics using just a spring
clip and ronguers - they are SO proficient at handling the animals
it's unbelievable. Ten times better than vets. If that's not PURE
love and devotion to the genus I don't know what is!!! It's also a
''cracking' social evening although we always declined a cup of tea
with all those toe nails and teeth chippings flying around!!!!!!!
Now on to Ivermectin!!! I know vets inject Ivo but it is also possible
to give it orally by dropper pipette. I THINK its the same formulation
as the injectable type, but you would need to definitely check with a
vet to find that out. It tastes bitter and it is toxic so you have to
be careful. They don't like it, so follow it with a treat! CCT give
their members enough Ivo in a bottle to treat their animals at home on
a regular ( I think it used to be every 3 months) prophylactic
( preventative) basis. It used to cost me around =A32 about 2 years ago
for a years supply and there was always enough left for me to treat my
rabbits aswell. You are required to demonstrate to them that you are
competant in the technique of towel wrapping your animals and
administering ' things' via a syringe ( without sending anything up
their noses!!). Mites live in virtually all hay so it will be a
continual problem for pigs. Regular ivomec has a residual action and
hangs around in the animals body for a while detering 'would be' mite
infestations. This is why it's toxic and needs careful admin. We have
been trained to use it carefully. My pigs lived for 6 and 7 yrs with
regular ivo and never a mite attack. CCT also advise Panacur to treat
worms also given prophylactically by me at home on a regular basis, as
worms live in the grass and soil.
Lets' hope Vedra Stanley-Spatcher ( CCT lady) has helped start her
movement in NZ when she was touring there????? Sorry Canada may have
to wait :0(
Heather
