I'm 55 years old. I'm looking for a dog to go with me on long walks. I
live near a large school yard where he and I could play Frisbee. I also
live near the sea, so we could take car rides to the beach where he
could have fun chasing the sea gulls (but not catch). I live with my
parents. My mom is 88 and my dad is 90. I am their primary care
giver. We don't have a fenced in back yard.
I am considering adopting a dog from a rescue group here in New Jersey.
I started by looking at a white German Shepherd who is 90 lbs. My
sister says a dog that big could easily knock the folks over. So, I've
been looking at: ****tuguese Water Dog but can't find any in rescue
groups nearby. American Pit Bull Terrier, Border Collie, Australian
Shepherd, Vizsla, a Labrador mix.
Mostly, being able to walk a mile or more at a fast clip is something I
want in a dog. A smart dog who's easy to train, barks only when he has
something to say, and doesn't shed much or only needs a quick bru****ng
every day.
We had family pets before. When the last one died, it was rough on me
and devastated my mom. So, I'd also appreciate some suggestions on how
to turn my mom around. When last I suggested a dog, she said : "No
dogs, no cats, nothing. I just can't take it when they die."
Thanks in advance for your help.
