Which horse for my daughter

by sarah&joe-t@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sep 16, 2006 at 04:35 AM

My 8 year old daughter absolutely loves horses. Thats all she talks
about. We decided to buy her a horse and we went to a horse seller to
look at some. I liked a large thorobred stallion but the guy said
thats not a horse for a kid. He suggested a smaller quarter horse
mare, but my daughter was afraid of it, said its too tall. I thought
it was kind of expensive too, he wanted $3500 but said she is well
trained, and for another $500 he's throw in a saddle and all the other
stuff for riding, plus he said he would give my daughter 2 free riding
lessons.
I guess for $4000 that is not too bad, but still a lot more than we
planned to pay. Originally I thought we would pay about $1500 for the
horse and a couple hundred more for some used riding stuff.

Since she was afraid of the horse, she showed us a smaller horse or
pony as he called it, but it looked like a horse to us. He said its a
half lingor (what ever that means). But he said that one is $6000
because it's trained to both pull a wagon and ride, and is used for
showing. We cant afford that one.

The strange thing is that my daughter keeps begging for the neighbors
pony. He said he would sell it to us for $50. He said the pony is 25
years old but healthy and a safe rider. My daughter absolutely loves
that old pony and is always talking to it, and hugging it and she even
rode it when the neighbor helped her onto the pony. She is not
afraid, and all she talks about is that pony. He said its a shetlund
pony. I must admit the pony is cute and seems real sweet, but I
thought we'd get something a little more classy that looks more like a
real horse for her, rather than some old pony that might die at any
moment. We planned to pay some decent money on her horse, but she
seems to like that old pony. We'd get the pony for her, in fact I
almost think we should because she spends more time by the neighbor
than at home. But that seems pretty old. If that pony dies, she will
be so sad.

I'm not sure what to do. Do we buy that old pony and hope it lives a
few more years, or do we buy an expensive horse that she may be afraid
of? The other thought is to buy another shetlund pony that is
younger, but so far none of these horse sellers have any. When we
asked her, she said she just wants Sassy (the neighbors pony). I dont
know what to do. Besides that, where do we get a pony size saddle?
All the saddles seem to be for bigger horses.
