Question: See dividing line:
Survivability of start-up tank nitrogen cycling in a 29 gl tank
Ah, the joys of learning curves!
I'm replacing my li'l gal's 10 gal w/ a 29 gal, to get a more stable
environment & avoid the current algae blooms I've been dealing with.
The 29 has a large triple chambered filter, w/ an impeller pump
(better than the Whisper designs I've stumbled across!)
& 2 under-gravel air tubes/bottom filters.
It's been running for 4 days, then I noticed a few fish going south &
moved 'em to the bigger tank,
starting w/ a few "testing" feeders I'd picked up a while back, for
starting the 10 gal tank..
This is on day 3 & I'm wondering about the nitrogen cycle & the
forgiveness of larger tanks.
currently: a few plants,
a black moor (given the moniker ET for eyeish reasons... which
tripled
in size in 4 weeks!)
a plecostomus, a smorgasborg of fancy guppies & a handful of ghost
shrimp.
-------------------------------------
My li'l gal has been loving the 110 gal tank at work, & they moved
everything over in less than 1 day from a 10 gal tank.
So, that raises my questions of whether a larger tank lowers the
viciousness of nitrogen cycling
& at what rates,
since I'm guessing surface area (primarily gravel?) for bacterial
growth is the major equation..?
Thanks kindly!
