Citing AP, CNN re****ted on June 16, 2004 that the American-born giant
panda, Hua Mei, is now pregnant after she settled into her new home in
southwestern China a few months ago.
4-year-old Hua Mei, whose name means "China-America" in Chinese, was
the first foreign-born panda to return to Sichuan. She arrived in
February from San Diego Zoo.
Chinese veterinarians showed her videos of mating pandas for fear that
Hua Mei, born in captivity, had little knowledge of ***. The
education appears to have paid off as Hua Mei would be due in
September.
Chinese government said last week the number of wild giant pandas
jumped by more than 40% to 1590, though World Wildlife Fund cautioned
that the spike does not necessarily imply a real increase in pandas.
