Giant Pandas are the most physically active and
vocal during the mating season. They should be fun
to watch in March...
Mexico Zoo's female giant panda Shuan Shuan estrus cycle
peaked early but Japan's male giant panda Ling Ling
was not interested despite Shuan Shuan's efforts to
draw him to mate - so it was decided to artificially
inseminate Shuan Shuan at Ueno Zoo before her cycle
ended. Mexico City Zoo still has two other female pandas.
Japan's Adventure World pandas might be worth
watching if the cub has been weaned from the
female.
San Diego Zoo's Bai Yun is still nursing her male
giant panda cub that was born last year so she will
not be mating this year. 4 year old Hua Mei was
sent to the Wolong Nature Reserve (Chengdu area,
Sichuan Province, PRC ) where the Chinese have identified
three prospective mates for her.
National Zoo's giant pandas are fairly frisky and
the chase is on - the question is whether they will
mate?
Atlanta Zoo also has a pair of pandas which in the
past have been more laid back are also worth
watching this mating season.
Thailand's Chang Mai Zoo panda pair are too young to mate.
In europe there are pandas at the
Berlin Zoo and at the Vienna(Austrian) zoo.
The Vienna Zoo giant panda pair is younger and
has the best chance to mate.
