4 of my 5 llamas are very heavy wooled with little to no guard
hairs. i didn't clip any of them this year, so the heavy
wooled crew has staple lengths of 6-9". because they weren't
clipped, they're pretty matted (mostly surface though).
i've started bru****ng them out this week, both to get the mats
out & to get them more used to being handled (haven't really
handled them in a couple years except for clipping, shots,
wormings etc). it took 2 hours to get all the shedding
undercoat out of the light wool llama. i spent 3 hours on the
first of the heavy wools & i'm really only half done, but i
didn't want to try her patience any longer than that (she's a
***** to catch, but sweet as pie once haltered. totally bomb-
proof, or at least toddler proof. lets kids walk under her,
touch her, screech. just stands there waggling her ears). she
kushed & i sat and combed her.
so, i'm using a rotating pin rake to comb them out. is there
anything better/faster/easier on the llama? i do use Llama
Glide on the really nasty mats (tails usually) to help reduce
pulling. i tried a mat splitter, but it seemed to me to pull
worse than the pin comb.
