Re: horse is eating mud

We feed a very good chelated loose mineral that is distributed by IFA. All
of our horses eat it from day one, including the babies. We have a
phosphorus
deficiency in our area and our hay is mainly alfalfa so there is a
definate
over abundance of calcium. When we were still raising Angus cattle they had
problems with hoof rot and had red tints to their black coats ( which can
also be seen in black horses)The red coat is usually copper deficiency and
the hoof root is magnesium and manganese. We also started feeding our cows
this mineral and had dramatic results.( No more red coats or hoof rot).We
live at 6000 ft. and all of our black horses are truly black, have no red
tint .They are outside 24/7.There are many good loose minerals sold
regionally that are produced to balanced the most common feeds in that
region.
