Non-Celebrity Divorces: Not So Famous, Just Really Rich
$460 million: telecommunications billionaire Craig McCaw and Wendy
McCaw. These two met as undergrads at Stanford and were married for 21
years. He built a cable and cellular phone service business into a
national force. He sold his cell phone company to AT&T where it became
known as AT&T Wireless and then Cingular. That transaction netted
McCaw and his brother/business partner $12.6 billion, a year before
his divorce from Wendy. Their case was settled before trial. Wendy=92s
settlement was the largest ever in the state of Wa****ngton.
Cellular telephone industry
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_McCaw#Cellular_telephone_industry
=2E..When the FCC held a lottery for cellular licenses in the early
1980s, many ordinary Americans got rich by winning the right to
establish cellular systems in cities across America. In addition to
entering the lottery himself, McCaw approached many other lottery
winners and bought their cellular rights, which were already
considered to be undervalued. Using the same tactic he'd used in cable
TV, McCaw financed an aggressive cellular expansion by borrowing
against and selling shares in the cable operation. Through continued
borrowing and smart management of only the most useful licenses, this
wireless land grab put McCaw's operation in the position of a
competitive nationwide cellular carrier before the in***bent landline
telephone industry took serious notice in the field.
=2E..After acquiring MCI's cellular wing in 1986, the McCaw brothers
sold the cable company to Cooke Cablevision (now part of Comcast). The
combined cellular operation was a significant player in the field. In
1990, McCaw was the highest paid CEO in the United States.
=2E..In 1994, the McCaw brothers sold McCaw Cellular to AT&T for $12.6
billion.[1] The company was renamed AT&T Wireless. AT&T Wireless was
sold to Cingular in 2004 to become the nation's largest wireless
carrier.

Feeling Lucky?
http://www.independent.com/news/2008/may/09/feeling-lucky/
Craig McCaw: Wendy=92s ex, now a Santa Barbara property owner and owner
of Clearwire Corp, has teamed up with Sprint Nextel in a $12 billion
wireless venture funded by Google and others, according to the L.A.
Times. The combo would create the world=92s fastest nationwide wireless
network for laptops, smart phones, and other mobile devices, as well
as desktop computers and in-home electronics, the Los Angeles Times
said. McCaw is married to Susan Rasinski McCaw, former U.S. ambassador
to Austria.
