When we got up this morning, we discovered that one of our cats had peed
all over two couches in our living room. We think it was our 9yo female,
Harley, because the other two cats have been sniffing at the stains
intensely, while she hasn't. And her tail smells like urine, suggesting
that she probably peed on herself at the same time. She's diabetic, so
we're going to talk to the vet about whether this is something that's
likely to happen again (this is the first time it's happened, ever, with
any of our cats).
Anyway, my real question is this: is there any way we can get the odor
removed or neutralized from the upholstery? We can't wash the covers of
the cu****ons, because we can't remove them from their contents (cheap
couches, soon to be replaced anyway), and the urine probably soaked into
the foam anyway. We've judiciously applied Febreze, and that's reduced
the odor, but not gotten rid of it. Oust covers up the odor tem****arily,
but again, it doesn't get rid of it. Is there anything else we can try,
or are we doomed to be stuck with the odor until next month's (already
planned) purchase of replacement furniture?
And, on a related note, is there anything we ought to look for in new
furniture that would make removal of urine odor easier if this happens
again? Would leather be better than fabric, for instance? Would
Scotch-garding make it easier to get rid of odor? Any useful suggestions
would be appreciated.
